To your anon worried about shelter dogs– a lot of shelter websites have bios & sometimes scales of things like energy level, leash skills, ease of training, etc. And the organization I volunteer for puts all their animals in foster homes, so they have a better idea of how these dogs will behave in a home and the foster owners are really good about providing thorough & up-to-date info about their behavior. so you can still get a decent idea about a shelter dog’s personality before committing!

I read online that a neo mastiff is a good dog for first time owners b/c of their obedience and temperament or something, but I was under the impression that no mastiff is good for a first time owner. Which one is true?
