- Do you or any of your followers have advice for communicating with a dog that has been debarked? We just inherited a debarked Maltese from a dying relative, and I’ve never had a dog that has had that surgery before. I have two papillons that have not been debarked, and I’m used to dogs that are very vocal. The Maltese, however, seems very timid and obviously quiet. How do I know how he’s feeling or if he’s upset or hurt?
