I moving to New York in a year, I thought about taking my dog, but I don’t think she could handle the crowds, at all. Once when we took her to the vet she got way to excited seeing people and had to be hooked to a breathing machine. I have to leave her with my grandma. I feel horrible though. I just know it would be too much for her. Is it bad to leave her behind? She needs to stay in a calm environment.

It’s easy to make decisions for your pet out of selfishness. When deciding the best life for a pet, a stable environment is best. However, this doesn’t mean your dog cannot adapt to a new life. Throwing a dog into a stressful situation is bad, but gradually desensitizing a dog to a stressful situation is possible. Introducing your dogs to small gatherings of people, then moving your way up slowly to crowds, can help. Especially with lots of praise and treats. If this issue is as debilitating as you describe, I would recommend consulting a trainer to help you recognize exact moments to praise and how slow you need to go. If this seems like too much work, or you are not the primary caretaker, then leaving the dog where it is most comfortable is the best choice.
