Hi! This is a question I have thought about a lot. I have a mixed breed (mostly husky x some malamute) so it’s been interesting trying to spot the differences. I have interacted with huskies more than I have malamutes. Each dog is different but there are some general characteristics we can distinguish, as well as some similarities.
In terms of training both breeds are very independent. Malamutes and huskies seem to have a “what’s in it for me” attitude. I believe that they can absolutely be trained to be off leash. With that said, the risk is not worth it for me. They have a very high prey drive & a need to run.
Huskies are more pack animals. They tend to get along easier with other dogs. Malamutes can be picky about their play mates. Malamutes can be same sex aggressive. If you get a malamute I 100% recommend going to a reputable breeder who also breeds for temperament. My pup has gotten some of the less desirable traits. He doesn’t get along with every dog. He prefers females. Males are okay if introduced properly. He resource guards. Huskies can be aloof with strangers. Malamutes love their family members.
In terms of exercise and training huskies tend to be more GO GO GO! Malamutes are a little more laid back but definitely need adequate exercise as well. Without proper training & exercise both breeds can be destructive.
I hope this helps a little! ~ @maxandmaeby
Hey :) I am wondering about the differences between Malamutes and Huskys in terms of character and temperament (trainability and so on)? Google mainly gives answers about the height/strength-differences, but maybe you or/and your followers can help me better :)
